It’s been a grueling, extra bruises and scraped knuckles, high on toxic fumes kind of week but the roof is done! Or mostly. There are some finishing touches left to do like stain and put up the cedar fascia and add a gutter to the front but there should be no more rain inside the house. Yay! Monday was a prep day and one more day of drying out the plywood.
Tuesday the EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer – for the nerds amoung us) went on. 400 pounds of folded rubber, three people, and luckily, a roof height that worked perfectly for getting it out of the truck. Once it was dragged into position it was left to relax for a bit to remove some folds.
Then the toxic goo, or bonding adhesive, went on. This picture is pre-stir. After the stirring it resembled butterscotch pudding.
We did it in 6 sections. It is like contact cement where you apply it to both surfaces and wait for it to dry then as soon as they touch they are stucker than stuck.
Aluminum flashing was bent up and the roof is now done. Good thing too because we got rain overnight. Only the flashing has water on it though so that’s a good sign.
We also managed to get the tyvek on the front getting ready for the windows and doors that are now on site.
Had a curious visitor stop by today to see what I was up to. I think he approves. He was watching the sailing regatta that had just started and could hear the sails flapping in the wind.
Cooler than Cool! Thanks for the updates – it is such an interesting process.
