Since the last update we’ve had the electrical panel installed (not yet hooked to power) and most of the interior walls are in place, but not without some headaches. Progress was halted when my wood delivery failed to show up. The one I had ordered a week earlier and patiently waited for since that was the soonest they were bringing a truck over. When it did not arrive, I got on the phone and they remedied the situation by sending it with the courier that comes over on the 4:30 ferry. Of course by the time he finally gets to me, it is pouring rain. I was just grateful it was there and didn’t think to count it until the next morning when I discovered half the 2x6s were missing. So again, the courier brought me wood on the 4:30 ferry. At least the plywood was there and I could get it up for the electrical panel to be mounted to.
So far we have the trench dug, wires buried, meter on the pole, panel and one outlet mounted inside and hydro scheduled to do a hook up some time before the 4th of July.
With that done, I got down to the business of making some walls. We still can’t close in the roof until the plumbing vent goes out through the top of the wall and into the “attic” void.
Since all the measurements came from me, and I’ve never built walls before, there were a few moments of sheer panic at the thought that I was responsible for any and all screw ups. So far only one little mis-measurement and it’s an easy one to fix. It’s not like we have very many walls anyway.
I was down to my last two walls for the tiny office (more like a closet) and the skies opened up and the rain came in – right where I had to finish my walls . . .
. . . and dripping down the wire and all over the newly installed electrical panel. I had already covered the front in poly but wasn’t thinking about it coming right down the wire behind the plastic. The lesson here is that water will always find a way and I can’t wait to get the roof membrane on next week. Hopefully the windows and doors will be in before the end of the month too.
All the neighbours around us are quite interested to see the building progression. This family sat and watched us one evening from across the street.
It has been a struggle to fit in some quality WD time between all the work to be done getting ready for the membrane and this 5 day rain happening now. We’ve managed a few outings into the wilds so I don’t think he’s too upset.
Poor WD looks very hard done by in the paradise that he is surrounded by. I feel so sorry for him – not! More like envious…
Are you doing carpentry work now? Sounds like you are doing your own interior work – your own framing? Well done! Looks like it’s coming together nicely.
