Finding accommodations in western Newfoundland proved to be a little more difficult than just sifting through hotels.com and booking it all in one shot.
This little gem, however, was easy to find on Airbnb. Gros Morne Tiny Chalets is located in Rocky Harbour and consists of 6 individual little cabins with everything one might need for a getaway.
We rented #3 and #5 for two nights. The layout was the same in both, just reversed. Where #3 had the kitchen, main bed and bathroom on the right side, #5 had them on the left. I don’t believe that would make any difference to the level of comfort as they are both outfitted with the same unbelievably comfortable bed and high-end amenities. There was a coffee maker, microwave, bbq, hot plate, mini-fridge and all the pots and pans, cutlery and dishware you might need for short stays.
The bathroom was small but fully functional with lots of storage, a full size shower and sink with enough counter space for all your toiletries. Personally, I loved that there was no wasted space. The extra height of the ceilings, combined with the window above the toilet, made a big difference to how spacious it actually felt.
The bunk room has two single bunks and a pocket door that can separate it from the main room (in case there are any snorers in the group). The ladder is fixed in place for safety which makes it a little more difficult for an adult or larger child to contort around it to get into the bottom bunk. Once fully tucked in though, it’s a comfortable, non-claustrophobic space. The window beside the bed helps add light to this small space.
The owner’s home is beside the cabins and both Tracy and Dwayne were close at hand to make sure we had everything we needed, give suggestions of things to do or just chat about our day.
In addition to the chalet porches, there were some cozy outdoor spaces where you could have a fire or sit at a picnic table to enjoy a little happy hour.
On the second night, we could see from our chalet that the sunset was going to be impressive. It was a quick drive down to the waterfront to capture the stunning colours. You could walk to see the sunset, but I waited until the last minute before deciding to go take pictures.
What's it near?
Gros Morne Tiny Chalets in Rocky Harbour provides an excellent base to explore the surrounding towns and park area.
The famous boat trip on Western Brook Pond is less than 30 minutes away (to the parking lot as the boat is another 3km walk from there).
The Tablelands where the mantle of the earth has been pushed to the surface can be reached in just over an hour and the Discovery Centre on the way has a nice little cafe and some fabulous views.
Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse and Norris Point are also close by and easy to explore.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay to explore Gros Morne National Park and nearby towns, I highly recommend Gros Morne Tiny Chalets. You can cook your own meals or go out to one of several nearby restaurants. The owners are clearly invested in this property and providing a unique experience for their guests. It shows in the craftsmanship of the buildings and the items they’ve chosen to outfit them with.
